federal college grants

If you are receiving federal and state grants for college will you receive less money for living off campus?
I am a college student and I am considered an independent with no family contribution. I have lived in the dorms for 2 years. I would like to get a place off campus with some friends. The thing is when I usually apply I am living in the dorms and I get just enough money to pay for school. I was wondering if I lived off campus would I still get that same amount of money? I can’t afford to get an apartment without the refund checks that I would get for not living in the dorms and saving that money. It’s just that it is much cheaper and nicer to have an apartment than to live in a 10×10 room lol. Thanks so much.
Well, that depends on your school’s financial aid office. Many change your estimated cost of attendance if you don’t live on-campus, because the cost of your attendance lowers (without the housing costs). If that’s the case with your school, you won’t receive as much money. Even if you do, remember that the landlord is going to verify income for you to rent a place (so you’ll need a job), and you’ll have to provide a deposit and at least first month’s rent (sometimes last as well) up front. Plus, you’ll have the additional cost of transportation, insurance, furniture, utilities, etc. Be sure that you can actually afford it before you sign a lease. Good luck!
